How to calculate VAT in the United Kingdom
To add VAT
Multiply the net price by 1.20. A jacket priced at £80 net becomes £96 gross (£80 × 1.20). The £16 difference is the VAT collected on behalf of HMRC.
To remove VAT
Divide the gross price by 1.20. A receipt for £120 gross contains £100 net and £20 VAT (£120 ÷ 1.20 = £100). Simple arithmetic — performed flawlessly above.
For the reduced rate, divide or multiply by 1.05. For zero-rated goods (children's clothes, most food, books, newspapers), no VAT applies — but you must still record the transaction.
